Artist Statement
The human body is central to my art practice. My work is mainly sculptural installation made from plaster, clay and bronze. It is an exploration of opposing structures and energies: such as inside and outside, presence and absence, individuality and mutuality. For example, when the imprints of my hand and fingers appeared in a grip of clay I was playing with, my mind was led to the haptic, the contact, the touch, the space or gap which was not obviously visible but existed. I also thought about uniqueness, human relationships and communication. The handshake is the first type of human contact when people meet, in the majority of cultures.
I have a strong relationship with the body, as a sculptor, a former dancer and a yoga practitioner. From the space in-between my hand, I pondered further upon different types of bodily gaps. When posing to myself the simple question "what is the shape of the space between the parts of my body?", I did not know the answer. The recent series The space in between examines the relationship between interior and exterior space. It refers to the literal and metaphorical spaces of our body and our environment.
I take casts from parts of the human body in positions that let air in or compress it. I enjoy the unpredictable outcome of the casting process. I work with my own body in conjunction with others. Sometimes the cast is taken from one body, sometimes from two together. The white colour of the material references classical sculpture. The imprint of the human body onto plaster freezes the bodies' "in-between spaces".
