The Mound

Dimensions: 200 x 400 x100cm

In situ sculptural installation,

Wimbledon Chase, 2017

The Mound is a long-lasting video-sculptural performance. It consists of a large pile of ground in an open space, which derives from a hole in the earth connected next to it. The part of earth is dug with a shovel by myself, during the cycle of one day: from dawn to dusk.

The repetitive, circular procedure of digging, shovelling and piling, represents the human struggle during the period of a day. Here, the daily cycle, refers to the greater cycle of time, life.

This continuous and constant movement of the object (human, artist, soil), represents our personal devotion to an ultimate goal.

The Mound is totally related to the Hole.

Despite their graphically opposite directions, they evolve equally. The bigger the hole is, the higher the Mound will be. The bigger the effort, the higher the outcome.

The parallel development of both the Hole and The Mound enact the spiritual evolution of each one; the earth, as in some religions is believed to be the origin, beginning and end of every creature, symbolises our material being and spiritual essence. For their development personal commitment, devotion and research is required.

The current videos are the documentation of practical research into the form, the shape, the material, the time the project necessitates and the difficulties that occur during its realization.

The project, ideally, takes place in an empty land field; a clear view free from objects, hills, trees, bushes, buildings or people.

The work can be divided into three sections; the documentation and footage of the procedure is the first part of the work. The in situ land art work, produced by the displacement of the ground, sets the second part.

The last stage is the reproduction of the shape for another translocation; the transferring of the mould of The Mound into an interior space.
